The Dörrenberg StudienAWARD 2017, awarded with a total of € 10,000, for outstanding bachelor thesis projects was presented in Engelskirchen on the 2nd of February 2017 to graduates of engineering sciences. Out of 40 applications from all over Germany, five were invited to the final round, among those two graduates of the IEHK. They presented their topics and answered critical questions from the jury. With pride, we can now announce that Mr. Manuel Henrich have reached the first and Mr. Christoph Dahlmann second place.
Mr. Henrich studied materials engineering and wrote his Bachelor's thesis in the department Integrity of Materials and Structures of Prof. Sebastian Münstermann. The title of his work is "Numerical calculation of a SN-band in dependence of inclusion parameters of the steel 38MnSiV5". Supervised by the scientific assistant Karl Gillner, Mr. Henrich calculated the influence of different inclusion parameters on the fatigue strength of a cyclically loaded ferritic-perlitic steel. Based on microstructure models for the FEM simulation program ABAQUS, he incorporated size, shape, surface roughness and chemical composition of inclusions to the models.
Mr. Dahlmann also studied materials engineering and wrote his bachelor's thesis in the team that became the group for Integrity of Materials and Structures during 2016. His work was supervised by Mr. Georg Golisch and has the title "Investigation of the cleavage fracture behavior of a structural steel S690QL as a function of the stress state". In his study, Mr. Dahlmann showed that the occurrence of cleavage fracture is dependent on the geometry of the loaded sample, so that probabilistic failure models are only suitable for the prediction of this catastrophic event, if they consider the stress triaxiality and the lode angle.
Both graduates show with their work that at the end of the Bachelor's degree scientific questions can be successfully answered at a high level, reflecting the IEHK's claim to combine good teaching with sophisticated science to provide convincing solutions for relevant engineering issues.
